Will my personal firewall cause problems?
Many personal computers make use of personal firewalls. Sometimes users may not even realize that their personal computers are running firewall software. Find-out how you can tell if your personal firewall will work with the Angie's List web site.

Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton Personal Firewall (NPF)

In order to permit access to a specific Web site you must be logged on as a Supervisor or an Adult user. Adult users can only change their own account.

If you use Norton Internet Security Professional 2004, Parental Control refers to Productivity Control. An Adult user refers to a Standard User.

To permit access to a specific website

  • Start Norton Internet Security.
  • In the Norton Internet Security Window, in the right pane, double-click Parental Control.
  • In the Parental Control dialog box, use the Parental Control settings drop-down list to select the account that you want to change.
  • Click Sites.
  • Use the section Web site categories to block to allow access to Web sites.
  • To allow access to all sites in a category, uncheck the box for that category and click OK.
  • To allow access to a specific site in a category, click Exceptions and go to Line 6.
  • In the Exceptions dialog box, click Add.
  • In the Add Web site to the Exception List dialog box, type the URL of the Web site that you want to unblock.
  • Click OK.
  • Repeat lines 6, 7, and 8 for each Web site that you want to add to the exceptions list.
  • When you have finished adding sites, click OK.

To permit cookies from a specific Web site:

  • Open NIS or NPF.
  • Click Privacy Control.
  • Click Configure.
  • Click Advanced.
  • On the Web tab (or Web Content tab) scroll through the URL list on the left and click the name of the Web site.
  • Click User Settings.
  • Uncheck Use Privacy Settings in the Cookies section, and then select Permit.
  • Click OK.
  • Open your Web browser, and then access the site.
  • If you see a NIS or NPF alert for a cookie, select "Permit . . ."
  • Check "Always use this action," and then click OK.
  • Repeat steps 1 to 11 for each cookie alert that you see.

To change the Cookie Blocking settings:

  • Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
  • In the left column, click Status & Settings.
  • Check the "Settings for" option and select the appropriate user.
  • Click Privacy Control, and then click Configure.
  • Click Custom Level.
  • Change the Cookie Blocking options to the desired setting.
  • Click OK.

Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP or Windows XP SP1

  • Before you disable your firewall, you must disconnect your computer from all networks, including the Internet. To do this, follow these steps:
    • In Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
    • Right-click the connection on which you want to disable ICF, and then click Properties.
    • On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Protect my computer or network check box.

To enable cookies in McAfee Internet Security.

  • Right-click the McAfee icon by your system clock or open the application from the Start Menu.
  • Click Privacy Service
  • Click Manage Users
  • The Privacy Service window appears. Click to highlight the name of the user whose setting you wish to change.
  • Click Edit
  • Click the Cookies tab
  • Select the desired option, such as Prompt users to accept cookies or Accept all cookies.
  • Click Apply

To Disable the Norton Firewall

  • Right-click the Norton Internet Security icon on the system tray and select Disable.

To Disable the McAfee Firewall

  • Uninstall McAfee
  • Reinstall McAfee, selecting Custom Installation.
  • Unselect McAfee Firewall.
  • Finish the rest of the McAfee installation as you did before.

To Disable Zone Alarm

  • Right-click the Zone Alarm icon in the System Tray, and select Shutdown Zone Alarm.

To set Privacy Levels for EZ Firewall (used by Road Runner Internet Service).

  • Select Privacy|Main.
  • In the Cookie control area, click the slider and drag it to Medium
  • Click OK

To add a site to the Privacy Site list for EZ Firewall (used by Road Runner Internet Service).

  • Select Privacy|Site List.
  • Click Add. The Add Site dialog appears.
  • In the URL field, enter the URL of the site you want to add, then click OK.
